Wind turbine technician jobs are one of the fastest-growing roles in UK renewable energy, with openings on both onshore and offshore wind farms. Getting into the role means combining a recognised engineering apprenticeship with the Global Wind Organisation (GWO) safety training every employer requires before you can access a turbine.

What Does a Wind Turbine Technician Do?

A wind turbine technician installs, inspects, maintains and repairs the mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems inside wind turbines, working either onshore or offshore.

Day to day, the role includes:

  • Fitting and testing electrical, mechanical and hydraulic equipment
  • Carrying out scheduled maintenance and fault-finding
  • Testing turbine blades and control systems
  • Running safety checks on cables and substations
  • Completing safety reports and job records

The work is physically demanding. Technicians regularly climb towers, work at height inside confined nacelle spaces, and on offshore sites may be away from port for extended periods. Demand for the role is growing steadily as the UK expands its onshore and offshore wind capacity, which is why safety training sits at the centre of the job, not alongside it.

Apprenticeship Routes In

Most technicians enter the industry through a Level 3 engineering apprenticeship, usually the Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician (MOET) standard or an equivalent Engineering Technician apprenticeship, run over roughly three years.

Typical entry requirements are five GCSEs at grade 4/C or above, including Maths and English, or an equivalent qualification. The first year is usually classroom and workshop based at a training provider, covering general electrical, mechanical and hydraulic principles. From year two, apprentices move onto site, working alongside qualified technicians and building up GWO and manufacturer-specific certifications as part of the programme.

Apprentice pay starts at or close to the National Minimum Wage apprentice rate and rises each year. Employer-run schemes in the sector have advertised first-year salaries in the £15,700 to £17,510 range, increasing in line with age and experience through the apprenticeship.

Not everyone comes in through an apprenticeship. Experienced electricians, mechanical fitters and forces-trained engineers regularly move across into wind from other trades, provided they complete the required GWO training first.

Salary Expectations (Onshore vs Offshore)

Qualified wind turbine technicians in the UK typically earn between £25,000 and £47,000 a year, with an average salary of £37,430.

Entry-level onshore roles tend to start around £25,000 to £30,000. With a few years' experience and additional certifications, mid-career technicians move into the £35,000 to £45,000 bracket, and specialists in areas such as gearbox repair or major component replacement can earn more again.

Offshore roles generally pay more than onshore equivalents, reflecting the additional Sea Survival training required, time away from home, and the more demanding working environment. Regional variation exists too. In Scotland, for example, qualified technicians typically start between £26,000 and £34,000, rising to £40,000 to £50,000 with experience.

Trainee to Offshore: Career Progression

Which GWO courses you need next depends on where you are in your career, not just your job title.

Starting out (trainee, onshore): GWO Working at Height, GWO Manual Handling, GWO First Aid and GWO Fire Awareness cover the Basic Safety Training requirement most employers ask for before your first site day.

Moving offshore: Add GWO Sea Survival, and many operators also require GWO Enhanced First Aid, which covers advanced first aid and telemedicine support for workers in remote locations without quick access to emergency services.

Taking on lifting or technical duties: Technicians moving into crane-assisted lifts or bolted connection work will need GWO Slinger Signaller and GWO Bolt Tightening on top of their Basic Safety Training.

Becoming rescue-capable: Experienced technicians who need to lead or assist emergency rescues from a hub, nacelle or tower typically complete GWO Advanced Rescue Training (ART), which builds on the skills covered in Working at Height.
