Course Overview

The following are the programme objectives:



  • Describe legislation and technical guidance relevant to mechanical systems (including PSSR regulations) for boiler and pressure systems.

  • Describe risks associated with temperature and pressure within systems.

  • Describe methods of safe isolation of plant and equipment (in line with HSG 235).

  • Create and record operational safety documentation to enable work on mechanical systems under a Permit to Work.

  • Describe characteristics of a Standing Instruction.

  • Retain relevant records and documentation.


Course Content


  • Safe working procedures on pressure systems as required by the Pressure Systems Safety Regulations 2000, Provision and use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and Safety Rules and Procedures for Work on Pressure Systems.

  • Requirements of statutory regulation/legislation.

  • Operational Appointments, Roles and Duties of Appointed Personnel.

  • Risk Assessment.

  • Creating, documenting and enforcing safe working procedures.


A theory assessment comprising short answer questions, in addition to an assessed safety documentation exercise.
