CABWI NRSWA Streetworks Unit 01 – Signing, Lighting and Guarding (Operative)

Course Overview

This unit is designed to allow the candidate to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to successfully sign, light and guard a work site. Candidates will learn how to survey the work site, identify suitable provisions, and ensure the safe passage of pedestrians, site personnel and vehicles while meeting legal requirements under the New Roads and Street Works Act 1991.

Completing this course gives delegates:

•The ability to survey and plan worksites in compliance with NRSWA 1991

•The skills to manage traffic flow, safeguard the public and protect site personnel

•Registration with CABWI and SWQR upon successful completion

•A street Works Register ID card valid for 5 years, renewable thereafter

Course Content

• Surveying works to put in place suitable provisions for the site location


• Assessing the safety of the public and site personnel


• Responsibilities and provisions for pedestrians, vehicular traffic, special needs (cyclists, horse riders), personnel and plant in the working area


• Identifying suitable equipment to protect pedestrians, vehicular traffic and site personnel


• Working and controlling portable traffic signals and Stop/Go traffic control in line with site requirements and conditions


• Planning a signing, lighting and guarding project


• Types of works, basic principles and legal requirements for signing and guarding


• On-site risk assessment, methods of traffic control, speed control and operating portable traffic signals


• Works on footways, cycle lanes, tracks, cycle routes and near tramways and railways
