Course Overview
This practical course is designed to make operatives fully conversant in the operation of the Gotcha Rescue Kit and its various modes of use. It enables delegates to carry out rescues in a range of locations and situations, including the recovery of casualties suspended from fall arrest lanyards, wire rope fall arrest blocks, or flexible line fall arresters.
This module is intended for operatives who are already competent in the use of their personal fall protection equipment.
The day is split into two sessions:
During training, delegates will perform activities at height to gain insight into their ability to operate safely in such conditions. The height and exposure experienced during the course will be recorded on the certification for reference only and is not intended to limit future work heights.
Course Content
Theory:
Understanding the implications of being suspended in a harness and the importance of rescue provision when working at height
Basic understanding of different rescue approaches and how the Gotcha Kit fits within the hierarchy of options (improvised, planned, and emergency services)
Understanding the importance of personal safety during rescue operations
Post-rescue care and handover procedures to a first aider or emergency services
Identifying key components of the rescue kit, including their strengths and limitations
Assessing situations and selecting the appropriate recovery technique, including anchor point selection and safe attachment points on the harness
Practical:
Correct fitting and adjustment of a fall arrest harness
Correct use of single and double fall arrest lanyards for safety during traversal and rescue
Understanding casualty management and use of temporary aids
Remote deployment of the Gotcha Rescue Kit from a position of safety to attach to an unconscious casualty
Using the rescue kit to raise or lower a suspended casualty
Applying mechanical advantage techniques to lift and recover the casualty safely
