Course Overview

The following are the programme objectives:



  • Describe legislation and technical guidance relevant to the control of risk from legionella bacteria (ACOP L8 and HSG274 parts 1-3).

  • Describe the risks and medical consequences associated with legionella bacteria and similar water borne diseases in water systems.

  • Describe conditions that favour the proliferation of bacteria in water systems.

  • Describe methods to control bacteria in water systems.

  • Describe monitoring and testing regimes for a hot and cold water system.

  • Describe the roles and responsibilities of key personnel in managing risk in water systems.

  • Describe key records and documentation used in managing risk in water systems.


Course Content

The courses will cover an awareness of risks, controls and legislation relevant to legionella bacteria in relation to the following:



  • Legionella bacteria, background, transmission / infection, conditions for growth and statistics

  • Statutory Requirements / HSE

  • Non-Statutory Documents ACOP L8 / HSG274

  • Responsibilities of Duty Holder / Responsible Person

  • Risk Assessment and Written Scheme

  • WRAS / Water Supply (Water Fittings Regulations)

  • Dead-ends / Deadlegs / Infrequently Used Outlets

  • Flushing of Infrequently Used Outlets

  • Point of Use Water Heaters / Combination Water Heaters

  • Tap Temperature Monitoring

  • Tank Inspection & Temperatures

  • Calorifier / Large Water Heaters Checks

  • Showers & Spray Taps

  • Thermostatic Mixing Valves

  • Cooling Towers / Pool Systems / Water Features / Fountains
