Course Overview

The Telescopic Handler, often called a telehandler, is a versatile piece of plant used across construction sites throughout the UK. It can perform a range of tasks such as assisting bricklayers, lifting roof trusses, sweeping roads when fitted with a bucket, and carrying suspended loads.

This course provides learners with the knowledge and practical skills to safely and effectively operate a telescopic handler in various site conditions while complying with industry standards and regulations.

Course Content

The course covers key health and safety regulations, operating procedures and terminology required for safe telehandler use. On completion, candidates will be able to:

• Identify the basic construction, components and purpose of all controls and gauges


• Follow manufacturer’s instructions, load charts and regulations


• Understand and explain relevant documentation


• Carry out all pre-use and running checks


• Configure the machine for both site and road travel


• Operate the telehandler safely across different terrains and inclines with and without a load


• Manoeuvre in confined areas using forward and reverse direction


• Set, lift, transport and place loads accurately


• Maintain load integrity and security


• Retrieve loads from vehicles or trailers


• Keep within safe working limits


• Correctly shut down and place the machine out of service


• Explain loading and unloading procedures for transport
