Course Overview

The following are the programme objectives:

• Describe legislation and technical guidance relevant to legionella bacteria and Thermostatic Mixing Valves.


• Describe the risks and medical consequences associated with legionella bacteria and similar water borne diseases in water systems.


• Describe the role, design and function of thermostatic mixing valves (TMV) and similar devices in water systems.


• Describe TMV function in the prevention of scalding.


• Describe TMV installation, commissioning and in-service testing procedures.


• Identify common faults associated with TMV's.


• Record testing and maintenance of TMV's.

The course is City & Guilds Assured and comes with certification, for those successful in assessment.

• Differences between low and high-risk scalding situations and variables that influence the risk


• Differences between burns and scalds, levels of harm and occurrence


• Factors which may affect treatment of a burn or scald


• Thermostatic Mixing Valves, why they are used and how they work


• Components of a TMV and their respective function


• Differences between Type 1/2/3 TMVs


• Different variants of TMV


• Conditions for growth of legionella and pseudomonas bacteria and their consequences for health


• Legal documentation relevant to TMVs (ACOP L8 / HSG274 Part 2 / Water Supply (Water Fittings) Regulations / Byelaws & Water Regs Guide / Building Regulations G3 / School Premise Regulations & Advice for Standards for Schools / BS8300-2:2018 / HSG220 / BEAMA Code of Practice / HTM04-01 & SHTM04-01 & WHTM04-01 / D 08)


• Design requirements for TMVs


• Materials which should not be used for TMV installation


• Mixed water temperature requirements for thermostatically controlled outlets
