Course Overview

The following are the programme objectives:

• Describe legislation and technical guidance (including HTM Technical Memorandum 06-02 Electrical safety guidance for low voltage systems).


• Describe roles and responsibilities of relevant persons defined by HTM.


• Describe the dangers of electricity and methods of protection from electric shock.


• Describe characteristics and limitations of LV distribution systems.


• Describe the operation and maintenance of LV switchgear and LV switch room equipment.


• Describe the operation of protective devices utilised within an LV distribution system.


• Describe methods to locate and identify electricity cables.


• Describe methods of testing electrical installations and requirements for test equipment.


• Accept operational safety documentation (including Permits to Work).


• Carry out single point of isolation (as required by Table 1 procedure).


• Describe testing and commissioning procedures for LV electrical distribution equipment.


• Maintain safe working procedures whilst performing practical tasks.


• Retain relevant records and documentation.


• Describe relevant emergency first aid measures.

A theory assessment comprising short answer questions, in addition to an observed safe isolation practical assessment.
