Course Overview
At the end of this course you will have an understanding of health and safety legislation and you'll be able to list common causes of accidents. You'll also be able to understand good practice in relation to electricity and describe the use of safe manual handling techniques as well as be able to describe good practice associated with COSHH regulations, be able to describe your action in the event of a fire and also you will know how to deal with an accident.
Course Content
HASAW 1974 is the core piece of legislation underpinning workplace safety in the UK. It places a general duty on employers to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees, and a duty on employees to take reasonable care of themselves and others. The course explains what this means day to day, including the concept of corporate manslaughter and how serious the consequences of non-compliance can be, both for individuals and for the organisation.
A key part of meeting HASAW duties is identifying hazards before they cause harm. The course introduces the basics of risk assessment: spotting a hazard, judging how likely it is to cause harm and how serious that harm could be, and putting reasonable controls in place. This isn't a substitute for a full risk assessment training course, but it gives staff the awareness they need to recognise when something isn't right and flag it.
Employers have a legal duty to report certain workplace injuries, diseases and dangerous occurrences to the HSE under RIDDOR (the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013). The course covers what needs to be reported, who's responsible for reporting it, and why accurate reporting matters, both for compliance and for understanding where risk is coming from across a site.
This course is suitable as a general induction for any employee, and works well as a baseline before staff move on to role-specific training such as manual handling, COSHH or working at height. It's particularly useful for new starters, general workforce inductions, and organisations that want a consistent foundation-level understanding of health and safety across all staff.
