Fire Marshal
Course Overview
The main outcome of this training course is to provide you with the knowledge to carry out the functions of a fire marshal. - Please note, this course also contains all of the content in the Basic Fire Awareness and Fire Extinguisher courses.
Course Content
A fire marshal, sometimes called a fire warden, is a designated member of staff trained to support fire safety and coordinate evacuation if a fire occurs. Core responsibilities generally include:
- Sweep procedures. Systematically checking designated areas to make sure no one is left behind during an evacuation.
- Assembly point management. Directing evacuated staff and visitors to the correct assembly point.
- Roll call. Checking evacuated staff and visitors against a list to confirm everyone is accounted for.
- Day-to-day fire safety checks. Spotting fire hazards and reporting concerns to the Responsible Person.
Fire marshal training exists to help meet duties under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 (the Fire Safety Order). The Order requires every workplace to have a "Responsible Person" who must appoint one or more competent people to assist with fire safety arrangements. The Fire Safety Order doesn't use the term "fire marshal" or specify an exact number — what it requires is competence.
There's no fixed number set out in law. The right number depends on your workplace's fire risk assessment: the size of the site, number of floors, how many people are normally present, and building complexity.
The Fire Safety Order doesn't set a fixed refresher interval. In practice, fire marshal certificates are commonly issued valid for 3 years, but annual refreshers are the widely recognised standard in higher-risk environments.
Fire Marshal provides extensive knowledge across fire prevention, evacuation protocol (including sweep procedures, assembly point management and roll call), and fire extinguisher use.
