Course Content
IOSH is the world's largest professional health and safety membership body, and Managing Safely is its flagship course for people who manage others rather than work in a dedicated safety role. It's built around practical scenarios rather than dense theory, which is why it's widely used across construction, manufacturing, logistics, retail and office-based businesses as the standard management-level safety qualification.
The course is structured around 8 core modules:
1. Introduction – why managing safety matters and what the course covers
2. Assessing Risks – how to identify and evaluate workplace risks
3. Controlling Risks – applying the hierarchy of control to reduce risk
4. Understanding Responsibilities – legal and organisational duties around safety
5. Understanding Hazards – recognising common categories of workplace hazard
6. Investigating Incidents – how to investigate accidents and near misses effectively
7. Measuring Performance – tracking and improving safety performance over time
8. Environmental Awareness and Other Topics – wider responsibilities connected to safety management
The course is assessed through two components: 30 online interactive multiple-choice questions, and a practical task in which you conduct a work-based risk assessment. This combination is designed to test both theoretical understanding and the ability to apply it to a real workplace situation.
The course takes 16 to 24 hours in total, but because it's delivered online and self-paced, most learners complete it in manageable sessions over one to two weeks rather than in a single sitting. This is one of the main practical advantages over the classroom version, which is typically delivered as a fixed multi-day block.
Both routes lead to the same IOSH Managing Safely certificate, so the choice comes down to how your team prefers to learn:
- Online (this course): self-paced, fits around existing workload, no time away from site or office, ideal for managers who can't commit to fixed dates.
- Classroom: fixed dates at a training centre, with the benefit of group discussion and a trainer on hand for questions in real time.
The IOSH Managing Safely certificate is a lifetime qualification. Unlike many safety certificates that need refreshing every one to three years, this one doesn't expire, though IOSH does recommend a refresher course after three years to keep knowledge current, particularly if regulations or your role has changed.
IOSH Managing Safely is aimed at managers and supervisors across any sector who are responsible for the health and safety of others, rather than dedicated health and safety professionals. It's particularly valuable for anyone stepping into a management role for the first time, or organisations wanting a consistent standard of safety management knowledge across their leadership team.
IOSH Managing Safely counts towards Continuing Professional Development (CPD) requirements for many professional bodies, making it a useful qualification to log alongside other management or safety-related training.
By the end of the course, you'll be able to:
- Assess risks and identify workplace hazards using a structured approach
- Apply appropriate controls to reduce risk
- Understand your legal and organisational responsibilities as a manager
- Investigate incidents and near misses effectively
- Measure and improve safety performance within your team
