Course Overview

A leader doesn't necessarily have to be a 'manager', but it's difficult to see how a manager could be truly effective without having at least some leadership skills. This course will introduce you to some of the important techniques and theories that can help you to improve your leadership skills and be more effective in your role.

Course Content

The course starts with the basics of leadership and where the concept originated, before moving into the theories that shape how leadership is taught and practised today.

This leadership development course online covers situational leadership theory, most closely associated with Hersey and Blanchard's model, which holds that effective leaders adapt their style to the readiness and ability of the person they're leading, rather than relying on one fixed approach.

Related to situational leadership, contingency theories argue that there's no single best way to lead — the right approach depends on the specific situation, team and task at hand.

Transactional leadership is based on clear structures of reward and consequence for performance. Transformational leadership focuses on inspiring and motivating a team toward a shared vision, often through personal influence rather than formal authority alone.

The course covers the leader's role in developing teams and individual team members, not just directing tasks day to day.

The final modules cover the role communication plays in effective leadership, and how leaders bring people together to move forward toward a shared vision.

Good leaders give feedback that is specific, timely and focused on behaviour rather than personality. The course covers how constructive feedback supports team development, and how the same message can land very differently depending on how and when it's delivered.

Part of developing teams involves helping people navigate change confidently. The course touches on how leaders can reduce uncertainty during periods of change by communicating clearly and involving the team in decisions where possible, rather than simply announcing outcomes.

Delivering leadership and management training online means managers across multiple sites and shift patterns can complete the same consistent content flexibly, rather than needing to gather for a single classroom-based session.

The course doesn't stop at defining theories. It also gives practical guidance on applying situational leadership and the transactional/transformational distinction to real day-to-day management decisions, such as how to adapt your approach with a new starter versus an experienced team member.

Leadership skills e-learning suits managers, supervisors and aspiring leaders across any sector — CPD leadership training that works whether or not "manager" is currently part of someone's job title.
