Course Overview
Learning disabilities, however they are acquired, are lifelong. They are neurological disabilities and as such affect how an individual understands and remembers information, how they learn and communicate. People can be born with learning disabilities or they may acquire them later in life.
Course Content
Working with learning disabilities training benefits from understanding the Social Model of Disability, which frames disability as arising from barriers created by society and the environment, rather than from the person's impairment itself. This contrasts with an older Medical Model that focuses purely on what a person cannot do. Learning disability training for staff covers the common types and causes of learning disability and how they affect people, recognising that a learning disability can be present from birth or acquired later in life, and that presentation varies significantly between individuals. The course touches on how a person-centred approach to care gets the best results, looking at how communication needs to adapt to the individual, rather than expecting the individual to adapt to a standard communication style. Employers and service providers have a duty under the Equality Act 2010 to make reasonable adjustments for people with learning disabilities. This learning disability e-learning course supports understanding of why those adjustments matter in practice. The course discusses overcoming the stigma attached to learning disabilities, looking at how management must perform and at the needs of the individual, rather than treating a learning disability as something to be managed around rather than understood. Anyone working in care, education or public services who may support or work alongside people with learning disabilities.
