Course Overview

People often equate the words mental health with mental illness and there are many definitions of
what mental health actually is. Mental health issues can happen to anyone despite social
background, intelligence, gender or other factors.

Course Content

he course starts by explaining the difference between mental health, which everyone has and which fluctuates over time, and mental illness, a diagnosable condition that affects a person's thinking, mood or behaviour. Understanding this distinction helps remove some of the stigma and confusion that often surrounds the subject.

The course covers the symptoms of some of the most common mental health conditions colleagues may be affected by, including anxiety, depression and stress-related conditions, so staff know what to look out for and what to expect if they're working alongside someone experiencing one of these.

Stress is one of the most common workplace mental health issues, and the HSE's Management Standards identify six key areas that can contribute to it: demands, control, support, relationships, role and change. Understanding these areas helps managers spot where pressure is building before it becomes a bigger problem.

Employers have a general duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to protect the health, safety and welfare of employees, and this extends to mental as well as physical health. Beyond the legal case, mental health awareness training supports earlier intervention, reduces stigma, and helps build a workplace culture where people feel able to raise concerns before they escalate.

This course is suitable for all staff, and particularly valuable for managers, supervisors and HR teams who are more likely to notice changes in colleagues or be approached for support.

By the end of the course, you'll be able to:

- Understand the difference between mental health and mental illness
- Recognise the symptoms of common mental health conditions
- Understand how workplace stress develops and what contributes to it
- Apply practical advice for working effectively with colleagues affected by these conditions
- Understand the value of a supportive, aware workplace culture
