Course Overview
This course is aimed at anyone who has a duty of care for, or comes into contact with, adults in need of care and support, either as a paid professional or a volunteer. You and the organisation you work for must take appropriate measures for the protection of adults in your care, while still ensuring they are supported and empowered. This course can bring you one step closer to being able to do this.
Course Content
Care Act 2014 safeguarding training centres on Section 42, which places a duty on local authorities to make enquiries where an adult with care and support needs may be at risk of abuse or neglect and is unable to protect themselves because of those needs.
The course covers the six principles underpinning adult safeguarding, remembered by the mnemonic PINCER: Partnership, Independence, Proportionality, Protection, Empowerment, and Accountability. These principles guide every safeguarding decision, ensuring adults are protected without losing control over their own lives.
The course covers ten recognised categories: physical, sexual, psychological, financial or material, neglect and acts of omission, discriminatory, organisational, domestic violence, modern slavery, and self-neglect.
Beyond listing the ten categories, the course gives practical examples of behavioural, financial and physical signs that might indicate an adult is experiencing abuse or neglect, helping staff move from theory to noticing real warning signs during day-to-day contact.
Practical guidance on recognising the signs of abuse and knowing the correct route to raise a concern, whether through an employer's internal safeguarding process or directly to the local authority.
Every local authority area has a Safeguarding Adults Board, bringing together the local authority, health services and police to oversee and coordinate adult safeguarding arrangements. The course explains this role and how it fits alongside frontline reporting.
