Course Overview
Safeguarding is a term that describes the work and processes undertaken to minimise and manage the risks involved to vulnerable children. During this training video you will hear many facts, figures and details surrounding the risk to children, the types of abuse suffered, how to recognise the signs of abuse and key safeguarding legislations put in place to minimise the abuse of children.
Course Content
This is the statutory guidance setting out how organisations and individuals should work together to safeguard children in England, most recently updated in 2023 to strengthen multi-agency working and information sharing.
For anyone working in an education setting, KCSIE training online is the specific statutory guidance schools and colleges must follow, covering safeguarding policies, staff training and the role of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL).
The course covers the four recognised categories: physical abuse, emotional abuse, sexual abuse, and neglect, along with how to recognise the signs of each.
Beyond defining the four categories, the course gives practical examples of behavioural and physical signs that might indicate a child is experiencing abuse, helping staff move from theory to noticing real warning signs in day-to-day contact with children.
Not every worry needs an immediate referral, but every concern needs recording and monitoring. The course covers how to judge when a concern crosses the threshold requiring formal action, rather than leaving staff unsure when to act.
Where a concern involves an allegation against a person working with children, staff need to know how and when to refer to the Local Authority Designated Officer (LADO), separately from a direct child protection referral to children's social care.
Once a concern has been raised through the correct route, whether to children's social care or the LADO, the course explains in outline what staff should expect to happen next and their ongoing role in supporting the child, rather than considering their responsibility finished once a referral is made.
Every organisation working with children should have a nominated safeguarding lead, and DSL safeguarding training online specifically prepares someone for that named responsibility, though this general awareness course is suitable for all staff, not just the DSL.
