UKATA Asbestos Awareness E-Learning
Course Overview
As well as informing you about the risks of working with asbestos, the course will deliver a lot more information about: Recognising asbestos, where it's used, minimising the risks and the legislation about working with asbestos. Under The Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, if you are working in an environment where you are likely to disturb asbestos materials then you must be aware of, and fully trained in, the dangers and correct safety practices.
Course Content
UKATA stands for the UK Asbestos Training Association, the leading accreditation body for asbestos training in the UK. A UKATA-accredited course means the content, assessment and certification have been checked against UKATA's own standards, so the certificate is recognised by main contractors, site managers and health and safety auditors across the sector.
This matters because not every asbestos awareness course carries the same weight. One Stop Safety Training also runs asbestos awareness e-learning courses approved by CPD & IIRSM and by IATP. All three cover similar ground, but they are certified by different bodies. If your site, contract or employer specifies UKATA accreditation, this is the course to book. If you are not sure which accreditation your site requires, check with your site manager or main contractor before booking, since booking the wrong one wastes both time and money.
This course is for anyone who might disturb asbestos as part of their normal work in a building built before 2000. That includes:
- Tradespeople such as electricians, plumbers, joiners and general maintenance workers
- Site supervisors and managers responsible for staff working in older buildings
- Facilities and estates staff carrying out routine repairs or inspections
- Anyone whose employer has identified a risk of asbestos exposure as part of a site risk assessment
Under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, employers have a legal duty to provide asbestos awareness training to anyone liable to be exposed to asbestos fibres at work. The UKATA Asbestos Awareness E-Learning course runs through 20 modules covering identification, history, legislation and emergency response, including:
- Recognising asbestos and where it is commonly found, including in domestic settings
- The health risks of asbestos exposure and how exposure occurs
- Who is most at risk and why
- Current asbestos legislation and the legal duty to manage it
- Asbestos surveys, risk assessment and management options
- What to do if you discover asbestos or believe you have been exposed
The course takes 1 to 2 hours to complete and can be done in one sitting or across several short sessions, since it is entirely online.
